The nursery at our church is held in the brightly-colored nursery in the Sunday School wing of the church during the Sunday morning worship service in the sanctuary. Adult volunteers, often with teen helpers, provide care for these youngsters. Parents of young children, infants to kindergarten age, are allowed to have an uninterrupted worship service due to the special gift of time provided by these adults.
Elementary Sunday School
The elementary Sunday School (pre-kindergarten through fifth grade) is held every Sunday morning during the school year from 9:15 to 10:15 in the Sunday School wing of the church. Adult teachers and helpers teach a lesson relating to a theme. Each week the children hear a Bible story and then play a game, cook, or do an art project related to the Bible story.
Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is held in our church, typically in early August, for four days in a row, with adult teachers and helpers (students who have completed sixth grade or higher) providing Christian teachings, through stories, songs, art, and play. The age range of the children participating in VBS is from 3-year olds to those who have completed fifth grade. Children from the entire community are welcome.
*All adults working with our children have the appropriate clearances, as required by the Presbyterian Church (USA)
High School Sunday School
The high school classes meet at the same time as the elementary, with adult teachers leading students in discussions about topics that concern our youth in their daily lives. These topics are introduced with videos and accompanied by probing questions which cause the students to think about being a Christian and following Jesus in their world today.
The youth group focuses on fun get-togethers, such as bowling, in the evenings and on weekends in order to continue to build on the Christian fellowship that the Sunday School promotes. This gives the youth a chance to see and interact with each other and with adults from the church in non-classroom situations outside our church building. In addition, the youth group helps with church sponsored events such as the Halloween party, where the youth helped younger children paint pumpkins to take to the Windy Hill Presbyterian Home to cheer the residents there.
Adult Sunday School
The adult Sunday School meets in the church social room (Westminster Hall) during the Sunday morning Sunday School hour. This class is led by different class members each week. A topic is chosen from a news headline from the previous week, and discussion on this ensues, as the class examines its import for a Christian, and one's reaction as a Christian.
During the year there are various Bible studies offered. Each year is different. This year the Joy of Fellowship Committee is sponsoring the studies, and would welcome suggestions for topics as well as volunteer leaders.
For All Ages
Krislund Camp and Conference Center, located about 45 miles to the east, is a joint outdoor ministry of Huntingdon, Northumberland, and Carlisle Presbyteries. It began as a summer camp experience for youth in the mid 1960's, and since then has been developing into a year-round retreat experience for all age groups. First Presbyterian Church has had a long and close experience with Krislund. We offer partial summer camp tuition scholarships to our church youth based on their yearly Sunday School attendance.
